An Interview with Kane Hodder | The Face of Horror Big Bad
Welcome to an exclusive interview with the legendary Kane Hodder. The iconic horror actor known for his portrayal of Jason Voorhees in the "Friday the 13th" series is also the charismatic face of the Face of Horror Competition, a fundraising competition run by Colossal Management. With a career that spans decades and a fan base to die for, Kane's involvement in the Face of Horror Competition has brought a unique and thrilling dimension to the event.
In this interview, we delve into Kane's experiences with the competition, his favorite moments, and his fascinating side project, the Hollywood Ghost Hunters. From connecting with fans to exploring the creepiest haunted locations, Kane shares insights that are sure to intrigue and excite horror enthusiasts everywhere.
1. We know you love connecting with your fans. How has your experience with Face of Horror been in that regard?
KH: I feel honored to be a part of Face of Horror. At conventions, I have had countless fans tell me their experience with the competition. How far they got, etc. Virtually all of them say they can't wait to try again.
2. What’s your favorite part about the FOH winner experiences?
KH: My favorite part of being involved is spending time with the overall winner at a really cool location. Last year, I was fortunate to work with the 2023 Face of Horror, Nell, at the Woodbury-Story House [check out the feature Rue Morgue magazine]. I also thoroughly enjoy watching all the finalists' videos, giving my critiques, and then picking one that they call "Kane's pick." So, in a way, there are two winners each year.
3. Tell us about how Hollywood Ghost Hunters was born.
KH: I was doing a film at Mansfield Penitentiary called "Fallen Angels" with my buddy Rick McCallum, who is also a stuntman and longtime friend. We have done 26 films together. In our downtime, we decided to explore the prison more. Since we both had an interest in the paranormal world, we decided then to form our own investigative group. We named it "Hollywood Ghost Hunters". We also thought it would be a little different to have the members comprised of other horror actors. You know, people that are used to scaring people. See if they can be scared by looking for ghosts. So, we enlisted some friends to become members: Danielle Harris and RA Mihailoff. That's how it all started.
4. What has been the creepiest location you’ve explored?
KH: I'd say the creepiest location we have ever investigated is a place called "Sloss Furnace" in Birmingham, Alabama. We had several members of the group who experienced various strange things—a squeezing feeling in the chest, getting pushed from behind, and even seeing a strange apparition. It's one of my favorite sites, but I've heard that it doesn't allow paranormal investigations anymore.
5. As far as the ghost hunt goes, what’s in store for the 2024 Face of Horror (we know the details are still in progress)?
KH: Wouldn’t you like to know? One thing I can guarantee is that it will be a place with lots of paranormal history—somewhere the winner will have to ‘watch their back.’
